The Struggle is a large scale painting installation that explores the distinctions we create between being human and being animal. Distinction is the method we use to construct our reality: separating one from another in the continual act of severing what used to be whole. We distinguish humankind from the rest of nature, our countries from other countries, our cultures, our religions, our families, our genders, and on and on, right down to our very selves. We divide our own psyches between the conscious and the unconscious, the self and that indefinable ‘other’. And what that schism creates is a struggle.
